MOBILE, Ala. A College of South Alabama newcomer wasn't armed as he was fatally shot with a campus officer, government bodies stated Tuesday, and that he acquired LSD, attacked others and chased the officer prior to being wiped out.
Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran held a news conference to produce details about the dying of Gil Collar, 18, of Wetumpka. The nude student was fatally wounded early Saturday after facing the officer on campus.
Collar visited a music festival and required the drug before attacking two people in automobiles and trying to bite a ladies arm, Cochran stated.
Government bodies stated Collar then visited the campus police headquarters, where he was shot by college officer Trevis Austin. Austin is on leave while researchers review the shooting.
Video taken with a surveillance camera demonstrated Collar nude and covered in sweat because he went after the retreating officer a lot more than 50 ft outdoors the building, Cochran stated. Collar got within 5 ft of Austin and the officer fired once, striking the student in the chest, Cochran stated.
Researchers are attempting to determine who provided Collar with LSD and may charge that individual with murder, Cochran stated.
While campus police typically carry pepper spray along with a baton, Cochran stated Austin was armed just with a gun throughout the confrontation.
Cochran stated he'd "serious concerns" about the killing of the unarmed student as he first heard what had happened, but he better understood the officer's decision to spread out fire after watching the videotape of the shooting.
"It is extremely effective," stated Cochran.
Cochran stated government bodies allows Collar's family and media reps to see the recording later, but it won't be launched openly.
Collar graduated captured from Wetumpka Senior High School, in which a vigil planned in remembrance of the longtime prep wrestler is going to be held Tuesday evening.
